TAKRAF Group’s tailings expertise will be in the spotlight at the 25th International Conference on Paste, Thickened and Filtered Tailings (Paste 2023), with a case study to be presented by TAKRAF Canada-based Joey de Guzman, DELKOR Process Engineer and TAKRAF Germany’s Rico Neumann, TAKRAF Chief Mine Planning Engineer.

Paste 2023, which is being hosted by the University of Alberta Geotechnical Centre, on behalf of the Australian Centre for Geomechanics, from 29 April – 3 May 2023, seeks to raise awareness of the importance of tailings stewardship to long-term industry sustainability.

The duo’s paper, “Technical and Economic Assessment of Dry Stack Tailings Alternatives for an Iron Ore Project”, describes a conceptual study related to a DST project for an iron ore operation in North America. The study, awarded by the project’s main contractor, was initiated in light of the increasingly more stringent requirements placed on mining projects, in terms of safety, sustainability and environmental acceptance.

The study investigated the production and handling of filtered iron ore tailings and covered:

  • Determination of technical specifications
  • Required material testing for thickening and filtration, and
  • Assessment of possible and feasible transport, dumping methods and technology selection, including investment and operating cost estimation.

Thomas Jabs, TAKRAF Group CEO, had this to say recently regarding the Group’s attendance at the conference, “The acceptance of our paper at this important conference is a reflection of the exceptional quality of work and depth of expertise that our specialists have to share. Our integrated DST offering is just one of the myriad of sustainability-focused solutions that our Group is able to provide to owners and operators around the world. These same owners and operators rely on our engineered solutions to lower the total cost of ownership and reduce environmental impact by improving efficiency with safe and reliable equipment.”
