Reclaimers

These machines are employed to reclaim stacked material from stockpiles. Various machine types are available ranging from bridge-type bucket-wheel reclaimers to boom-type bucket-wheel reclaimers and drum (barrel) reclaimers.

Bridge-Type Bucket-Wheel Reclaimers

TAKRAF bridge-type bucket-wheel reclaimers are primarily employed in applications where bulk material is to be homogenized (mixed) with medium to high material flow rates required.

Our bridge-type bucket-wheel reclaimers cover the following flow rates and sizes:

  • Reclaiming capacity: 300 t/h to 12,000 t/h
  • Rail gauge: 30 m to 60 m

All machines are specifically designed to our client's unique requirements and incorporate various solutions according to their specific application.

Specific design features of our bridge-type bucket-wheel reclaimers

In applications involving smaller flow rates and/or smaller particle sizes, we are able to configure machines in such a manner in which the bucket-wheel is located below the bridge.

Where higher flow rates and/or larger particle sizes are required, we strongly suggest a machine configuration in which the bridge is mounted through the bucket-wheel. In this manner, power transmission between bucket-wheel trolley and bridge is enhanced which has a positive effect on machine life.

A number of further configurations are also able to be specified, ranging from the number of mounted bucket-wheel trolleys to the manner in which they are arranged. Machines employing two bucket-wheel trolleys are able to achieve a higher reclamation rate, whilst also achieving greater material homogenization at lower flow rate fluctuations. When installing two bucket-wheel trolleys, the trolleys can be mechanically linked so that they both share a common trolley drive system. In applications where very high flow rates are required and/or where very wide stockpiles are employed, we prefer to install each bucket-wheel trolley with their own drive system. A trolley speed controller, developed in-house by TAKRAF, is then employed as this increases interaction efficiency between the two bucket-wheel trolleys.

We are also able to provide bridge bucket-wheel reclaimers for one or two directional reclaiming and all our machines are automated.

Boom-Type Bucket-Wheel Reclaimers

TAKRAF boom-type bucket-wheel reclaimers are popular in applications where medium to high flow rates from dumps are being reclaimed.

In certain countries, such boom-type machines are also included in the “balanced machines” nomenclature referring to a machine that boasts some form of counterweight.

Our boom-type bucket-wheel reclaimers cover the following flow rates and sizes:

  • Reclaiming capacity: 500 t/h to 20,000 t/h
  • Rail gauge: 6 m to 20 m
  • Boom length: 25 m to 60 m

All machines are specifically designed to our client's requirements and incorporate various solutions according to their specific application.

Specific design features of our boom-type bucket-wheel reclaimers

In applications involving low or medium flow rates and/or short boom lengths, machines in which the bucket-wheel and counterweight boom are combined in a fixed rocker arrangement are generally preferred. This arrangement results in a reduced number of pivot joints.

Where higher flow rates and/or longer boom lengths are required, we prefer a machine design in which the bucket-wheel and counterweight boom are combined in a pantograph arrangement. The pantograph arrangement ensures that with large boom loads, small changes in the point of balance are stabilized, which has a significantly positive impact on machine steadiness and tilt safety. A drawback with this design however is the increased number of pivot joints.

Automation options

The majority of our boom-type bucket-wheel reclaimers are semi-automated; however, there is a growing trend towards full automation and we are able to supply fully automated machines too. These machines incorporate further control systems and sensor logic and are controlled and monitored from a central control room, doing without a machine control cabin.

Drum (Barrel) Reclaimers

Drum (or barrel) reclaimers are particularly suited to the homogenization and blending of bulk material for sophisticated downstream processes, especially for iron ore and/or coal processing.

Our machines are all specifically designed to our client's requirements and incorporate various solutions according to their specific application - our machines can be designed for one or two working directions.

Specific design features of our drum reclaimers

Up to 112 buckets can be arranged in 6 to 8 parallel rows with these symmetrical buckets swiveling automatically in the pre-selected working direction. The buckets continuously remove thin layers of material from the entire cross-section of the stockpile and discharge this onto a belt conveyor located within the drum. As a result, the stockpile is levelled evenly and cleanly with each passage.

For specific hard-working areas that are in contact with material (i.e. rakes and buckets), high-strength and especially hardened materials are employed which ensure a long service life, even when extremely abrasive material is reclaimed. Rakes are equipped with prongs or scraper rods, depending on particle size of material to be reclaimed, and create a continuous flow of material on the escarpment of the pile over the entire width directly into the reclaiming buckets. In regions with extremely low temperatures, rakes can even be equipped with hardened tines that are able to break frozen surfaces.

Excellent mixing and blending

The excellent mixing and blending effect of the drum reclaimer is achieved through:

  • Continuous flow and trickling of material on the escarpment across the entire stockpile width
  • Simultaneous reclaiming of thin layers of material over the entire stockpile cross-section
  • Overlapping discharge of material onto the cross-belt conveyor

Our typical drum reclaimers cover the following flow rates and sizes:

  • Nominal reclaim capacity: up to 6,000 t/h
  • Stockpile width: 30 m to 50 m
  • Stockpile height: up to 21 m
  • Stockpile length: up to 600 m
  • Rail gauge: 30 m to 56 m
  • Drum diameter: 4.8 m to 6.8 m
  • Cutting circle diameter: 6.4 m to 8.0 m
  • Drum rotation speed: 3 min-1 to 5 min-1

Reclaiming in two different directions

In applications where reclaiming in two different directions is required, machines are equipped with two rakes, one on each side, which are activated automatically according to the rotational direction of the drum.

Our drum reclaimers are fully automated and thus work without an operator. Our machines boast a variety of sensors, which enables them to be controlled and monitored from a central control room.

Boom-type bucket wheel reclaimer for HBI

This machine forms part of a complete material handling system awarded to TAKRAF in 2018 for both the plant’s raw material feed and finished product.

The system design brief called for the raw material (iron ore pellets) to be received from self-unloading barges and conveyed to a stockpile. From there, it is reclaimed to be conveyed to day-bins fed by a tripper car. From the day-bins, material is discharged onto weigh feeders and then conveyed through a screening system before feeding the HBI production plant. The finished product is received from the plant and conveyed to a second stockpile, from where it is stacked, reclaimed and fed to a load-out station for the loading of trucks or trains for onward transport.
