Troughed belt conveyors suitable for a variety of applications

TAKRAF Troughed Belt Conveyors are customized solutions for mining and material handling, suited to a wide range of applications from comprising part of mobile or stationary machines to covering long distances, and from mining or extraction to in-plant or overland systems.  They convey material over long distances, in straight lines or with horizontal curves, with standard drives or gearless drives.

Typical applications are:

Stationary overland conveyors

Designed to suit individual project requirements

Since every site application places different demands on the design of the belt conveyor system, TAKRAF Group advises and assists clients in determining the most suitable conveyor solutions for their specific applications. Leveraging our significant experience in bulk material handling, we are able to anticipate potential problems and address them by designing our product specifically to your requirements on site.

Material handling system compatibility

We have been designing and installing bulk material handling systems across various applications, commodities and countries for some 100 years. Our engineered conveying solutions lower the total cost of ownership and reduce environmental impact by improving efficiency, safety and reliability.

Our positioning as a complete material handling systems provider allows us to design and install belt conveyors that are easily integrated into complex material handling systems within a mining operation, including bucket wheel or bucket chain excavators, crushing plants and In-Pit Crushing & Conveying (IPCC) solutions. Our conveying solutions also integrate well with downstream material handling solutions, including overland conveyors, stockyard equipment and port systems .

Conveyors with horizontal curves

Horizontal belt curves lead to a reduction in conveyor sections and therefore to economical technical solutions with high availability. Customized curve radii allow safe operation of the system in all operating conditions. Curve radii between 800 m and 8,000 m make it possible to follow the route of the conveyor with a minimum number of individual lengths.

Ultra long overland conveyors

Our expertise in designing ultra long overland conveyors was applied successfully in the supply of a 19 km overland conveyor system in India, designed for the greenfields Utkal Alumina Project. This is one of the longest conveyor systems to be installed within Indian territory to date.

The overland conveyor system transports bauxite through undulating terrain to a new 4.5 mtpa alumina plant and in its final configuration comprises two single flight conveyors of 14.5 km and 3.6 km in length, respectively. The 2,850 t/h conveyor system has a drop of 250 m and passes through some 45 crossings over its total span of travel from material loading to discharge.

Gearless drive technology

TAKRAF is one of a limited number of global conveyor manufacturers boasting an operating reference in the use of advanced gearless drive technology in conveyor systems and we are proud of our association with our technology partner, ABB.

Gearless drives eliminate the need for a gearbox, thereby significantly reducing the number of main wear parts, which results in increased efficiency and reliability, as well as less maintenance being required. Further advantages include a considerable reduction in the drive system’s footprint and emissions. For a copper mine in Chile, studies showed that CO2 emissions were reduced by 66% as compared to diesel truck engines for the same copper production volume.

World’s most powerful belt conveyor system

In 2019, TAKRAF delivered equipment for the principal ore transport system for Chuquicamata in Chile, one of the world’s largest copper ore mines, moving ore extracted underground to an above-ground processing plant.

This incredible system, boasting a total installed drive power of 58 MW, transports crushed copper ore from underground storage bins to the surface along a 7 km underground tunnel and overcomes 1 km of vertical elevation. Once on surface, the ore travels along an overland conveyor that transports it the final 6 km to the distribution silo. The underground system (comprising two conveyors of about equal length) and the overland conveyor both boast advanced gearless drive technology.

Shiftable conveyors

Bench conveyors, which are operated together with mining and dumping machines, feature a shiftable design, which enables them to be moved according to the changing layout of the mine or the dump. The conveyor modules are equipped with steel sleepers and rails to allow easy shifting.

Shiftable belt conveyors are used in the dumping process of various bulk materials, such as ash, gypsum, ripios and overburden.

The shifting procedure is performed by a shifting vehicle, which travels up and down the conveyor line and moves the conveyor in incremental steps into its new position. The shifting vehicle has a special attachment for rail clamping the shifting head.

In-plant conveyors

In-plant conveyors interconnect system equipment, which can range from ship, barge, wagon (railcar) and truck loaders and/or unloaders, to stackers, reclaimers, storage bins/hoppers, feeders, crushers, screens and other equipment.

Flexibility and reliability

The focus in designing such conveyor solutions is for them to be easily integrated within the constraints of brownfield or greenfield operations and/or be sufficiently flexible to expand and adapt to changing requirements as new equipment, lines or capacity increases are added to your operation.

The conveying systems need to be designed with robustness and reliability from the start, with the capability to efficiently operate under arduous conditions, reducing downtime and increasing overall operational efficiency.

Specifications tailored to specific handling requirements

Conveyor lengths can vary from short distances of just a few meters up ~1.6 km (1 mi). Belt widths are typically between ~600 mm (24 in) and ~2,134 mm (84 in), depending on the capacity, application and client/project requirements. As such, conveying capacities can vary from just a few tons per hour to ~7,500 t/h.

Such conveying solutions are located indoors or outdoors, with erection ranging from simple stringers and post supports, to elevation on deck-type trusses, or in rectangular or tubular galleries.

Depending on requirements, in-plant conveyors integrate belt scales, metal detectors, magnetic separators and various types of material analyzers and sampling equipment.
