Reclaimer types: Which one is best for you?

Reclaimers are used to reclaim stacked material from stockpiles. TAKRAF Group offers several reclaimer machine types, including boom-type bucket-wheel reclaimers, bridge-type bucket-wheel reclaimers and drum (barrel) reclaimers.

Choosing the right reclaimer depends on your material handling and homogenization (blending) requirements.

Boom-type bucket-wheel reclaimers

These reclaimers are suitable for medium to very high flow rates and are ideal for reclaiming large amounts of bulk material from a stockpile.

Design features of boom-type bucket-wheel reclaimers

In applications involving low or medium flow rates and/or short boom lengths, machine designs in which the bucket-wheel and counterweight boom are combined in a fixed rocker arrangement are generally preferred, as this arrangement results in a reduced number of pivot joints.

Where higher flow rates and/or longer boom lengths are required, we prefer a machine design in which the bucket-wheel and counterweight boom are combined in a pantograph arrangement. The pantograph arrangement ensures that with large boom loads, minor changes in the point of balance are stabilized, which has a significantly positive impact on machine steadiness and tilt safety. A drawback with this design, however, is the increased number of pivot joints.

Automation options

Most of our boom-type bucket-wheel reclaimers are semi-automated. However, we can supply fully automated machines too. Fully automated machines boast advanced control systems and sensor logic and are monitored from a central control room, eliminating the need for a control cabin on the machine.

Bridge-type bucket-wheel reclaimers

These reclaimers are more suited to the blending of material with medium to high flow rates.

Design features of bridge-type bucket-wheel reclaimers

For higher flow rates and/or larger particle sizes, we strongly suggest a machine configuration in which the bridge is mounted through the bucket wheel. In this manner, power transmission between the bucket-wheel trolley and bridge is enhanced which has a positive effect on machine life.

Configurations include the number of mounted bucket-wheel trolleys and their arrangement. Two carriages can increase material recovery and homogenization and can also be mechanically linked for a common drive system. However, we prefer to install each carriage with its own individual drive. In such instances, our proprietary TAKRAF Speed Controller improves the efficiency of the interaction between the carriages.

Machines can be designed for one or two directional reclaiming and all our machines are fully automated.

Drum reclaimers (barrel reclaimers)

These are ideal for homogenizing and blending bulk material for sophisticated downstream processes, especially for iron ore and/or coal processing. Our machines can be designed for one or two working directions.

The drum reclaimer achieves excellent mixing and blending through:

  • Continuous flow and trickling of material on the escarpment across the entire stockpile width
  • Simultaneous reclaiming of thin layers of material over the entire stockpile cross-section
  • Overlapping discharge of material onto the cross-belt conveyor

Design features of drum reclaimers

All TAKRAF machines are designed to our client's requirements and incorporate various solutions according to the specific application.

Several buckets can be arranged in parallel rows with these symmetrical buckets swiveling automatically in the pre-selected working direction. These buckets continuously remove thin material layers from the stockpile cross-section as they rotate and discharge onto a belt conveyor within the drum. The machine is equipped with rakes. These rakes are equipped with prongs or scraper rods, depending on the particle size of material to be reclaimed, and create a continuous flow of material over the entire width of the pile escarpment directly into the reclaiming buckets.

High-strength, hardened materials ensure a long service life, even when handling abrasive materials. For extremely low temperatures, rakes can have hardened tines to break frozen surfaces.

As a benefit to our clients, TAKRAF provides complete in-house design services, starting from stockyard layout to stockyard automation and the equipment for the stockyard.

These services include:

  • Rock testing
  • System sizing and arrangement
  • Automatic operation
