When did you join TAKRAF Group and what does your role involve today?
I joined TAKRAF Group in 2013. From the beginning, my role combined office administration with project coordination, which allowed me to support both corporate functions and project teams. On the office management side, I handled the day-to-day operations of the office, supported staff needs and ensured internal processes ran smoothly. I was also responsible for managing our corporate insurance policies, making sure all projects had the correct coverage and remained compliant.
Alongside that, I provided project coordination and administrative support, working closely with project teams to help keep everything aligned and organized. Over time, my responsibilities grew to include more involvement in quality and safety, both in the office and on site.
Safety features prominently in your work. How has that shaped your career?
Safety has been a core part of my role from early on. I supported quality assurance and on-site quality control checks, helped develop and implement safety management programs and coordinated staff safety training and new employee orientations. I also conducted on-site facility inspections to help maintain safe work environments.
One significant responsibility was managing Certificate of Recognition (COR) audits in line with Government of Alberta safety regulations. This meant preparing documentation, coordinating audit activities and ensuring ongoing compliance. Through this hands-on experience, I developed a strong understanding of occupational health and safety systems, which motivated me to work toward achieving my Safety Advisor accreditation.
What has been a personal highlight or key achievement for you at TAKRAF Canada?
One of my biggest highlights has been training and working as a Safety Officer. From collaborating closely with site teams to gaining exposure to equipment from design through construction and commissioning, I developed a deep understanding of both operational excellence and safety. Being trusted to contribute to these areas from such an early stage in my career was incredibly valuable and rewarding.
What do you enjoy most about working at TAKRAF Group?
What I enjoy most is the variety. I’m involved in multiple aspects of a project, from planning and design through to implementation. That keeps the work engaging and helps me see how engineering decisions translate into real-world operations.
Safety is something I’m especially passionate about, so working in an environment where it is always the top priority means a lot to me. I also find it very rewarding to see a project move from concept to reality in the field and know that our work supports resource development and operational improvements. The industry is constantly evolving, which creates great opportunities to keep learning and growing as part of a strong team.
Why do you think engineering and mining are attractive sectors for women?
Engineering and mining offer women the chance to work on challenging and meaningful projects that have a real impact. These industries rely on creativity, analytical thinking and problem-solving to address complex challenges such as improving safety, resource efficiency and sustainability.
They also offer the opportunity to contribute to greater diversity in fields that have traditionally been male-dominated. Diverse teams tend to deliver better solutions and foster more inclusive workplace cultures. As more organizations actively promote equality and mentorship, women can play an important role in shaping the future of these industries while building rewarding careers.
What advice would you give to young people entering the mining or engineering sector?
My advice would be to stay curious and never stop learning. Mining and engineering are constantly evolving with new technologies, safety practices and environmental standards. The people who succeed long term are those who keep asking questions, seek hands-on experience and take the initiative to learn beyond what is required.
It’s also important to work well with others and never compromise on safety or integrity. Those principles will take you a long way, not only in this industry but in the wider world of work as well.
Which woman would you like to sit down to dinner with and why?
I would choose Diana, Princess of Wales. She showed that leadership can be compassionate and emotionally open without losing authority. Diana redefined what a working woman in a public role could look like and demonstrated that it’s possible to remain authentic, independent and focused on meaningful causes - even through major life changes. That example continues to inspire many women in leadership and beyond.
